The Golden Era

I just had to get this off my chest...

What the hell happened to real Hip Hop/Rap? The last 8 years have been about rims, rappers that sing too much, watered down lyrics, alcohol, jewels, and big titty hoes shaking their asses. Kids born around 1987-1991 have mostly listened to nothing else on the radio and went to the stores or the Internet to listen to more. The last "Golden Era" of Hip Hop and Rap was around 1992-1996. And most of this generation has completely missed this. If you mention the Wu-Tang Clan to them, they'll give you a blank stare. Most of these kids don't even realize how untouchable 2pac was when he was alive.

And what is even more scary is the fact that a lot of people close to my age have seem to forgotten the Golden Era of Hip Hop/Rap. Mostly because they have become brainwashed with what they hear on the radio. Just because something is getting played on the radio, doesn't mean its good. A great deal of shit sells these days because that's all that is being played...SHIT!!! If conscious rap got just as enough play as the other shit people would see the difference. Right now there isn't even a happy medium.

When I was growing up Hip hop/Rap was becoming stronger lyrically year after year. Artists that became legend were coming out with classics almost monthly. Ice T, NWA, Kool G Rap, Chill Rob G, KRS One, EPMD, Divine Styler, D.O.C, LL Cool J, Slick Rick (and so on) were all dropping albums. You were either Dope or Wack thats it. People like me grew up analyzing beats, and lyrics, reading liner notes and finding out what song was sampled. Most of this new generation of listeners don't do that. But then again look at what they have to listen to...

GIMME DAT PUSSY, IN THE CLUB, HOTEL, I'M A HUSTLA, GET YOUR EAGLE ONPASS THE COURVOISER...Why the Hell has Hip Hop/Rap gone from "The Golden Era" to this? Consciousness in Hip Hop/Rap is dying. Mostly because people running things don't give a shit about the conscious of today's child.

Songs like "Mosh" and "Why" were nice, but lets get real. They were too little too late. And when the buzz of songs like that died down, it was back to making songs with no soul, which means lyrics without purpose.

It makes me sick when people today listen to artists like Nas, Rakim, 2pac, Canibus, and Ras Kass (to name a few) and they go on to say things like, "What is he talking about? I don't like it" Or "He's talking too fast" Well its because your mind thinks too slow most likely.

New Danger by Mos Def was on point. But these same morons say things like, "I didn't like it, too many guitars." Huh???? Black people revolutionized the guitar and now we want to stay away from it?

This Rap(e) generation is killing me, and I've lost all hope for it. But it brings a smile to my face that real Hip Hop/Rap is alive and well underground. I'm thankful that artists still choose to make it, and people with brains decide to listen.

I wonder how artists like Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and the Roots feel when they make their music. They must know that because they are not putting out watered down bullshit lyrics, is the reason their music isn't going to get a lot of play. Damn, it really is sad.

That's all I have to say.

Talk to ya later...
