The
Ryan McBain 2006 Mock NFL Draft
The 2006 NFL draft
is just around the corner. This is how I think things will
unfold. Enjoy!
1. HOUSTON TEXANS
Reggie Bush
Running Back | Junior | Southern Cal
Height: 5-10 7/8 | Weight: 201 | 40-Time: 4.33
This is a no brainer. Reggie Bush is the most dynamic and exciting prospect to come along in quite some time. He is capable of beating teams as a runner, receiver or return man. Bush is a threat to score every time he touches the rock for the simple fact that he starts and stops better than anyone. The other scary thing is that Bush is very strong for his size and will break tackles. I don't care what the outcome of this Reggie Bush house scandal (Aka House Gate) is. The Texans are taking Bush. There are some questions about his ability to take several carries. He will also need to improve as a blocker at the big dance. Best case scenario is that Bush becomes the next Barry Sanders. Worse case scenario? Marshall Faulk. Which isn't too bad either.
2. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
Mario Williams
Defensive End | Junior | North Carolina St.
Height: 6-7 | Weight: 295 | 40-Time: 4.66
This kid is amazing. A thoroughbred plain and simple. Williams is an awesome pass rusher who can make quarterbacks piss in their pants. He has a huge frame, long arms, and quick first step. Williams has tremendous speed for someone his size. Simply put, he is the best defensive end to come along since Julius Peppers. The only downside is that he does not give it his all on every play and needs to be motivated from time to time.
3. TENNESSEE TITANS
Matt Leinart
Quarterback | Senior | Southern Cal
Height: 6-4 7/8 | Weight: 225 | 40-Time: 4.80
The quintessential team leader and field general. Leinart has no problem reading defensives and can deliver in the clutch (ask Charlie Weiss). Has good throwing mechanics and makes good decisions. He is a winner who might be able to start in the NFL right now. Leinart has ok arm strength but nothing special. Was he just an ok QB on a really good team?
4. NEW YORK JETS
Jay Cutler
Height: 6-3 1/4 | Weight: 226 | 40-Time: 4.77
Quarterback | Senior | Vanderbilt
Chad Penntington is about as fragile as a China doll. Which is the reason why I think the Jets will select Jay Cutler. Cutler has as a very strong arm with a quick delivery and good accuracy. Cutler is a tough one who will stay in the pocket and take a hit instead of making a big mistake. He throws well on the run and is a team leader. He needs to work on his mechanics and footwork. Cutler can also be a little reckless at times when he has too much confidence in his arm.
5. GREEN BAY PACKERS
D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Offensive Tackle | Senior | Virginia
Height: 6-6 | Weight: 305 | 40-Time: 5.07
Has fast feet that are second to none. Ferguson is extremely quick and agile with superb balance. He would add the pass protection that LORD FARVE needs. Ferguson is a smart player who is always getting better. In other words, he still has a lot of upside with a great deal of experience as an offensive tackle. He needs to put on more weight for the next level which might hurt his mobility.
6. SAN FRANCICSO 49'ERS
A.J. Hawk
Outside Linebacker | Senior | Ohio St.
Height: 6-1 | Weight: 248 | 40-Time: 4.59
A.J. Hawk has top football intelligence and can make plays sideline-to-sideline. He has great speed and is a pure tackler. He doesn't seem to have problems when covering backs and tight ends. Does an excellent job of getting past blockers and working his way through traffic. Awesome work ethic. Hawk is a little bit on the short size and needs to improve as a blitzer.
7. THE LEGENDARY OAKLAND RAIDERS
Vince Young
Quarterback | Junior | Texas
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 229 | 40-Time: 4.57
Vince Young has the rare athletic ability that is almost never seen. Young has great size, speed, and quickness with his feet and the ball. He is an outstanding runner and scrambler with tremendous field vision. He still has a lot of upside. Vince Young improved each year at his position. Amazing leader and field general. Can take over and dominate a game at anytime. He is still kind of raw as a passer and is a better athlete than a quarterback. Needs to improve at reading defenses as well as adjusting to taking snaps from under center. Young will most likely have to sit and learn for a year before he is ready to start at the next level.
8. BUFFALO BILLS
Winston Justice
Offensive Tackle | Junior | Southern Cal
Height: 6-6 1/8 | Weight: 319 | 40-Time: 5.15
Justice has great size and more room to bulk up his large frame. Justice is a very strong and good run blocker and pass blocker who protected the blind side of lefty quarterback Matt Leinart. He is very mobile and has quick feet. Justice has a ton of upside and 3 years of starting experience. He needs to improve on his technique. Justice also has some character issues which caused him to be suspended for the entire 2004 season.
9. DETROIT LIONS
Michael Huff
Safety | Senior | Texas
Height: 6-0 | Weight: 204 | 40-Time: 4.34
Michael Huff is a very gifted athletic with excellent speed. He is a playmaker and a hawk in the secondary who has has the uncanny ability to take interceptions all the way for the score. Huff is a smart player and a good tackler that can play safety and cornerback. He comes from a program with a strong history of developing pro DB's. Huff needs to get stronger for the next level. He has the tendency to gamble for the big turnover from time to time. Huff also never had the chance to work on just one position.
10. ARIZONA CARDINALS
Haloti Ngata
Defensive Tackle | Junior | Oregon
Height: 6-4 1/8 | Weight: 338 | 40-Time: 5.12
Haloti Ngata is an awesome athlete with good size and a huge frame. He has excellent speed and quickness. Ngata has no problem controlling the line of scrimmage. Has the ability to stuff the run and take on multiple blockers. Simply put, he is more than just a space eater and can penetrate and rush the passer if given the chance. Ngata might possibly be a dominant 3-4 nose tackle at the next level. He is also a great kick blocker on special teams. He needs to improve on the technique of his position. His ACL might be an issue considering he tore it and missed the entire 2003 season.
11. ST. LOUIS RAMS
Vernon Davis
Tight End | Junior | Maryland
Height: 6-3 3/4 | Weight: 263 | 40-Time: 4.38
Anyone this size that can run a 4.38 40 is scary. Vernon Davis is an amazing natural athlete with rare ability. He is a dangerous weapon in the passing game. Davis has good hands and can make plays after the catch. He got better each year, and still has a lot of potential. Davis is a versatile player who also has experience at playing fullback and wide receiver. For the next level he needs to improve as a blocker. Unfortunately, he does not have the height you look for at the tight end position. Davis is kind of a wide receiver trapped in a tight ends body.
12. CLEVELAND BROWNS
Manny Lawson
Defensive End | Senior | North Carolina St.
Height: 6-5 3/8 | Weight: 241 | 40-Time: 4.43
Manny Lawson has great speed and quickness. He is a wonderful pass rusher off the edge. Lawson is a very smart player with good instincts and good tackling skills. His vertical leap is simply amazing. Lawson's vertical jump was higher than the device used to measure that stat. He has a lot of upside. He relies too much on his speed. Lawson will need to be in the right system to make it in the NFL. He will need to get stronger, improve on defending the run, and work on not getting swallowed by offensive tackles.
13. BALTIMORE RAVENS
Chad Jackson
Wide Receiver | Junior | Florida
Height: 6-0 7/8 | Weight: 213 | 40-Time: 4.32
Chad Jackson has excellent size with very good speed and quickness. Jackson is very explosive and runs well after the catch and in the open field. His hands are reliable and he runs good routes. He is also a excellent leaper who doesn't mind working in the middle of the field. Jackson has yet to reach his full potential and still has a lot of upside. He does need to be more aggressive at the next level. Jackson needs to get stronger and improve as a blocker. Can he break the trend of recent Gator wide receivers? Travis Taylor, Reidel Anthony, Reche Caldwell, Jabar Gaffney, etc. have all been disappointing.
14. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Santonio Holmes
Wide Receiver | Junior | Ohio St.
Height: 5-10 5/8 | Weight: 179 | 40-Time: 4.34
Sanatonio Holmes is a vertical home run threat who can really separate from defenders. He plays faster than his 40 time and is quick. The routes he runs are good and he knows how to get open. Holmes runs well after the catch and is a threat to score anytime he touches the football. He has nice hands and can catch the ball while running full speed. Holmes is aggressive and plays bigger than his frame shows but lacks elite timed speed. He has no problem blocking but his size will most likely limit him in being great in that area. He has the tendency to let some balls go into his body.
15. DENVER BRONCOS (f/ATL)
Brodrick Bunkley
Defensive Tackle | Senior | Florida St.
Height: 6-2 3/4 | Weight: 306 | 40-Time: 4.94
Brodrick Bunkley is extremely strong and explosive. He makes a lot of plays in the opponents backfield. Bunkley has a engine that never seems to stop and he locates the ball well. Because of his lack of size and bulk, Bunkley's durability is a concern and he has a history of knee and ankle problems. He needs better work ethic. Bunkley might be a character issue considering he was arrested in 2003 for stealing a video game.
16. MIAMI DOLPHINS
Jonathan Joseph
Cornerback | Junior | South Carolina
Height: 5-11 | Weight: 193 | 40-Time: 4.31
Jonathan Joseph has very good timed and recovery speed. Joseph led the team in interceptions in '05. He is known for being a reliable tackler. Joseph looks very natural in coverage and has the ability to play man-to-man. He has a great amount of upside and could really develop at the next level. Unfortunately Joseph does not have a lot of experience and he still needs to work on his technique. He missed the entire 2004 season with a broken foot.
17. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Ernie Sims
Outside Linebacker | Senior | Florida St.
Height: 5-11 1/8 | Weight: 231 | 40-Time: 4.50
Ernie Sims is an outstanding athlete who is very quick and fast. Sims is a solid tackler who hits like a ton of bricks. He has great strength for his size and doesn't get hung up on blockers. Sims is a very intense player who is also experienced and very productive sideline-to-sideline. He might need to put on some more weight for the next level. Sims also may need to be in the right type of scheme to make it big in the league. His lack of height is also a concern.
18. DALLAS COWBOYS
Kamerion Wimbley
Defensive End | Senior | Florida St.
Height: 6-3 7/8 | Weight: 248 | 40-Time: 4.61
Kamerion Wimbley is a tremendous athlete who is fast and very quick with a burst. He will wreak havoc rushing the passer off the edge. Wimbley does a good job closing in on the ball and can change directions very well. He still has a lot of upside. Wimbley needs to put on some bulk and he might have to change positions for the next level. Wimbley relies too much on his speed and has been known to be a liability against the run. He also sometimes struggles to get through blockers.
19. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
Antonio Cromartie
Cornerback | Junior | Florida St.
Height: 6-2 1/8 | Weight: 208 | 40-Time: 4.41
Antonio Cromartie is an natural athlete with good size and long arms. He has great hands and ball skills. Cromartie is a very good cover man who can make the big play and interception. He is a very physical player who is a threat to score every time he gets his hands on the ball. Versatile and can be used as a good return man. He has a ton of upside. Cromartie is coming off a knee injury and has only played in 25 games. He needs to improve on his footwork and also must become be more consistent. Cromartie takes too many risks and needs to become a better tackler.
20. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
Tye Hill
Cornerback | Senior | Clemson
Height: 5-9 5/8 | Weight: 185 | 40-Time: 4.30
Tye Hill is one of the fastest players in the draft. His recovery speed is exceptional. Hill's body is solid and he plays the ball very well. He is very physical and isn't afraid to play the run. Hill is a awesome leaper who has improved each year. He has a lot of experience and is very durable. Hill does not however have the ideal height for the next level. Hill is known for dropping some interceptions. He is not the best in zone coverage. Hill might have a hard time being as physical will the pro receivers as he was with the college ones.
21. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
LenDale White
Running Back | Junior | Southern Cal
Height: 6-0 3/8 | Weight: 238 | 40-Time: 4.50
LenDale White has good size and is an excellent goal line runner with a nose for the end zone. He has amazing feet and is pretty quick for someone his size. White has good field vision, instincts and body control. He is strong and is a very physical runner. White will give people headaches when they try to tackle him. He is also a decent receiver. He does not have top notch speed and will not outrun too many people. His work ethic is questionable and needs to improve as a blocker. He also is known for having some ankle problems.
22. SAN FRANCISCO 49'ERS (f/WAS/DEN)
Marcedes Lewis
Tight End | Senior | U.C.L.A.
Height: 6-6 3/8 | Weight: 261 | 40-Time: 4.84

Lewis has very good hands and can adjust to bad thrown balls. He was the top pass catching threat on his team. He is a decent blocker with a lot of potential. He needs to add on more weight. Lewis might have problems separating in the NFL. He does not have the elite timed speed.
23. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
Donte Whitner
Safety | Junior | Ohio St.
Height: 5-10 1/8 | Weight: 204 | 40-Time: 4.40
Donte Whitner has excellent speed and quickness. He has no problem covering a lot of ground. Whitner has good hands is known for being physical and being a good tackler. He has the ability to make the big play. Whitner is a good pass rusher on the blitz. He is kind of a Safety/Corner tweener who might not have a true position at the next level. His durability is also a concern.

He is little on the short side and his speed is just ok. Hali has short arms and needs to improve on using his hands. He is also known to get swallowed by offensive linemen sometimes. Sinorice Moss is very fast and explosive. He has the skills to stretch the field vertically. Moss is a deep ball threat who can take it the distance from anywhere and at any time. He has good hands and runs his routes well. Moss has no problem getting open. He might have the ability to be a top return man in the NFL. Moss is not very big and his body is not solid.
