Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams spoke with Collider<\/a> yesterday (at the Visual Effects Society Awards) about the ongoing discussion of the new lightsaber design revealed in the first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated film<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Abrams admitted the decision regarding the crossguard saber was a controversial one internally as well.<\/p>\n

“It was a number of conversations [that led to the design]. It was a sketch that became a whole thing and, you know, this was not done without a lot of conversation and it\u2019s fun to see people have the conversation that we had, but in reverse.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I will say that what\u2019s been funny is, since the lightsaber\u2019s come out, I cannot tell you how many contradictory emails I have received from people who have both defended it with unbelievably detailed graphics\u2026I\u2019ve gotten things that are nuts, and I\u2019ve gotten people who\u2019ve shown how it\u2019ll kill you and how it doesn\u2019t make any sense. It\u2019s been the funniest thing to see the arguments that have developed over this thing.”<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
