  • Remy Ma Hit With $10 Million Civil Lawsuit

If facing murder charges and not being able to leave the country to make money for an extensive tour wasn't enough, rapper Remy Ma has now been hit with a $10 million civil lawsuit by the victim she allegedly shot and critically wounded.

In a suit filed on Friday (December 21), according to Reuters, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, the woman who was allegedly shot by the rapper, named the rapper and several of her recording companies -- including Universal Music Group, owned by French media group Vivendi, and Sure Shot Recordings -- in the multi-million dollar suit, claiming the music companies encouraged Remy to engage in violent behavior as part of her image.

The suit said that the 26-year-old rapper (real name: Remy Smith) "willfully, wantonly and maliciously" shot and critically wounded Barnes-Joseph.

Reuters reports that Remy's lawyer, Ivan Fisher, called the lawsuit "irresponsible," and it was "looking for the deepest pocket it could find."

Remy is accused of shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph twice in the abdomen back in July, following an argument over $2,000 in missing money from her purse. The rapper believed Barnes-Joseph had stolen it, resulting in the woman being shot.

She faces several charges including intimidation and gang assault charges, as well as attempted murder. She faces up to 25 years in prison if found guilty for the later charges.

The suit says that Barnes-Joseph suffered severe physical harm and mental anguish following the shooting, despite the missing money never being found.

On Thursday (December 20), Remy was hit with a blow to her pockets when Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Rena Uviller denied her request to leave the country so she could tour through five countries in Europe (see "Judge Denies Remy Ma's Request To Leave The Country").

Uviller said that due to the seriousness of the charges, Remy could not leave, despite her lawyer telling the judge she was in desperate need of money because -- due to her arrest -- she is unable to book shows and her recording contract is currently on hold.
