Where there is high-speed data, there is an opportunity for porn. But wireless carriers are keen to stem the possible proliferation of hardcore content on today's handsets, which are quite capable of streaming pornographic movies or showing high-res images.
Don't believe that XXX is on the rise in cellular? At 3GSM in Cannes this week there were several adult content providers showing their, ahem, services. Filtering software could keep content like this out of handsets for now, but the question of civil liberties and technological feasibility reared its head at the expo. Currently, only Britain has a law in effect that bars the distribution of adult content on handsets for users under 18.
The discussion of curbing pornography on cellphones is much more advanced in Europe than America, where there are more 3G users. But with this month's launch of 3G via Verizon Wireless' V CAST service, the subject is surely spoken of in the corridors of all American carriers. Will we attempt to enforce a ban? Place filters over content for minors? Or could handset networks follow the spiral of porn on the internet, which saw an explosive growth period that never quite seemed to end?
