  • Nintendo Boss on Wii U Price: 'This Isn't Going to Be Cheap'

Nintendo's new Wii U grabbed much of the spotlight at this year's E3, and while the new controller and console provide a unique combination for gamers, many are beginning to wonder just how expensive the hardware will be. After all, if the innards are comparable to the PS3 or Xbox 360, and then you add on the cost of the big tablet Wii U controller, it could be priced higher than most Nintendo consoles have been in the past.

Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata recently admitted, "This is not going to be cheap." In a previous interview, Iwata had already indicated that the price would likely be greater than 20,000 yen (around $250), but that isn't necessarily indicative of what the U.S. MSRP would ultimately be. The Wii originally launched at $249, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the Wii U launch at $300 or more.

In speaking with the London Evening Standard, Iwata also acknowledged that Nintendo's unveiling at E3 probably could have gone over better and that Nintendo should have tried to fully explain the console to consumers who may have become confused.

"Because we put so much emphasis on the controller, there appeared to be some misunderstandings. We should have made more effort to explain how it works," he said. "We haven't made any kind of blunder, but I should have shown a single picture of the new console, then started talking about the controller. The console is not drastically different, and Wii U is about the controller. The console itself will be almost invisible."
