  • More proof of imminent Xbox 720 and PS4

PS3 and Xbox 360 users need to be thankful of the impending release of the Nintendo Wii U, as it could have forced Sony and Microsoft into releasing the Xbox 720 and the PS4 a little earlier than expected. Do not take our word for it; this is what Ubisoft CEO expects to see soon. He has not given a timescale, all he said was it will be “coming soon.”

There had been rumors that Sony would release their next-gen console during E3 2011, this has now been moved back to 2012. Microsoft has said that they have a few years left in theirs, but if Sony were to launch the PlayStation 4, then this could force their hand as well. We should not be naive here, as you can be sure that both companies are a lot further along than they make out.

The Wii U looks set to take the fight to the current market leaders, as the console is said to have far superior graphics – but so it should do – as it will be a much newer games console. The original was seen as a game changer, and you can see this by how the Move and Kinect has taken what was good from Nintendo’s idea and improved on it.

Sales of the current Nintendo Wii have slowed dramatically over the past couple of years, and this is due to Sony and PS3 offering price reductions of their consoles, as well as motion control systems that make the Wii look like an old Atari system.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Yves Guillemot from Ubisoft said that they want to be the first developer to release a game on the Wii U, as well as the PS4 and the Xbox 720. One has to wonder if he has some inside knowledge, because of Sony and Microsoft were working on their new games consoles, then they will need the backing of some of the biggest developers.

Maybe when Guillemot said the PS4 and Xbox 720 was coming soon and that we are now in a transition period, there could be a hidden message. He knows something and this is his way of sharing it with us. OK, that is a little far-fetched, but it’s a nice notion. It is hard to say how well received the Wii U will be, but with a wave of innovative features it is hard to see it doing anything but great.
