  • Kirko Bangz Creatively Honors Legend Kurt Cobain

Houston rapper Kirko Bangz is riding a buzz right now worthy of attention. With a DJ Drama hosted mixtape blazing the streets now, Kirko’s been gaining a foothold in the talented Southern rap scene.

A young Kirko began his rap career at the age of 15, due in part to the rapper witnessing his single mother’s struggles. Kirko used his mother’s pain as motivation for his music, keeping his music mostly to himself while thrilling high school classmates who came to recognize the low-key Kirko as a lyrical talent.

Upon graduation from high school, Kirko went on to the same college legendary producer DJ Premier attended, Prairie View University. It was there that Kirko began to really plug in to his craft, culminating to the 2009 release of his first mixtape Procrastination Kills. Getting the attention of fellow student and now manager D Will, the pair worked together in getting Kirko’s fame and name up to recognizable levels.

With his latest project Procrastination Kills Part 3 just released this March, the curiously named Kirko Bangz – which appears to be an interpolation of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain’s name – is poised to gain new fans with his new video and single from the project “Toast To The Life” featuring crooner Brian Angel. Kirko is currently signed to Asylum/Warner Brothers Records.

In recognizing Kurt Cobain’s name, it is fitting some words should be said on this sad anniversary of sorts.

Tortured lead singer for grunge rock band Nirvana Kurt Cobain tragically committed suicide 17 years ago today at the age of 27 and also at the height of his fame. Often pegged as the voice of Generation X, Cobain’s career with Nirvana began in the small town of Aberdeen, Washington and along with friend Krist Novoselic, they became the face of Seattle’s growing alternative rock landscape.

With Nirvana’s second album Nevermind released in 1991, the hit single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” catapulted the band to fame and Cobain never embraced his role as a vocal leader of angst ridden youth. As time went on, Cobain’s very public struggle with drug addiction and depression and squabbles with his musician wife Courtney Love began to paint a picture of a pained soul who never found solace in his success.

Cobain was found dead in his home in Seattle on April 5, 1994, with medical officials ruling the death a suicide by a self-inflicted gun wound.

    I can't believe it's been 17 years.
