  • Whitney Houston died from drug overdose, not drowning: report

Whitney Houston died after consuming a cocktail of prescription drugs and alcohol, not from drowning, according to a new report.

The singer did not have enough water in her lungs to have drowned, Los Angeles County Coroner's Office officials told the 48-year-old superstar's relatives, family sources told TMZ.

Houston took a combination of Xanax and other prescription drugs with alcohol, and she could have passed away before her head became submerged in the bathtub water, TMZ's sources claimed.

The prescription drugs Xanax, Lorazepam and Valium were found in her suite, Room 434, at the posh Beverly Hilton, one report said.

TMZ also reported that Houston had visited Beverly Hills doctors twice in five days before she died. It was unclear what type of doctors she visited.

The singer's official autopsy results have not yet been released, and several reports stating that she drowned were not confirmed by the coroner's office -- which said it may take up to eight weeks for the official cause of death to be released.

"There will be no cause of death at this time, as it is awaiting toxicology," Los Angeles deputy coroner Ed Winter said Sunday at a news conference. "I know there were reports of did she drown or was it an overdose, but I will not be commenting on that."

Details on how the "I Will Always Love You" legend was discovered Saturday afternoon also were revealed by the website.

Houston's body was found by her aunt, Mary Jones, who attempted to revive the star with CPR, TMZ claimed.

Jones had prepared her niece's outfit for the evening and laid out her dress on the bed before leaving the singer's hotel room for around 30 minutes.

When Jones returned, Houston did not emerge from the bathroom -- so she entered the room and found her famous niece in the tub.

Jones attempted CPR before paramedics arrived at 3:23 p.m. local time. Houston was declared dead at 3:55 p.m..

The star's mother, Cissy Houston, arranged to have her daughter's body flown back to Atlanta -- where the singer spent many of her latter years -- as early as Tuesday.

Winter reportedly told Houston's family that releasing the body was not an issue because there was no evidence of foul play in the singer's death.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney," Houston's family said in a statement through the singer's publicist, thanking fans for their outpouring of support. "This is an unimaginable tragedy, and we will miss her terribly."

Houston, who had battled drug addiction for years, had been spotted boozing it up and looking “completely out of it’’ at the Playhouse Nightclub a little over a week ago.

Then Thursday, she crashed a rehearsal with Davis and singers Brandy and Monica — who were set to appear at Davis’ party — reeking of booze, sweat and cigarettes and with her hair wet, one witness said.

Asked about her wet hair, Houston replied, “I went swimming. I do two hours a day.”

That night, Houston and her 18-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, partied hard at the Tru Hollywood club, with the star jumping up onstage at one point with Kelly Price to sing “Jesus Loves Me.’’ It was to be her final public performance.

Distraught relatives and friends received two scares involving Bobbi Kristina after her mother’s shocking death.

Bobbi, Houston’s daughter with singer Bobby Brown, was first taken to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at around 11 p.m. Saturday because she was overwrought with grief, sources said. The inconsolable teen was then briefly hospitalized again yesterday.

She had been hanging out in the hotel’s lobby when her mother’s body was discovered, according to People magazine.

Hearing that something was terribly wrong upstairs, Bobbi “was screaming, ‘What’s wrong with her? What’s wrong with her?’” a source said.

The teen rushed to her mom’s room and fought with police when they refused to let her in.

Nine hours passed before Houston’s body was removed from her room. During that time, Davis, 79, proceeded with the party downstairs.

“I’m personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me,” Davis told the crowd, ending his speech with, “Now, ladies and gentlemen, let the music begin.’’

Bobby Brown, who did a show in Mississippi Saturday after learning of his ex-wife’s death, last night skipped a concert in Nashville to rush to his daughter’s side.

He landed in Los Angeles last night, looking as if he had been crying, and said nothing.
