  • After Stretch With Lakers, Free Agent Horry Joins Spurs

Free-agent forward Robert Horry signed a two-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday night.

Horry spent the last 6 1/2 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and helped them win three straight NBA championships. He agreed to a one-year contract with a club option for a second year. Horry will reportedly earn about $5 million a season.

"Robert Horry is a proven winner. He doesn't care about personal accolades. His only concern is winning. There is a reason he has five championship rings,'' Spurs General Manager R.C. Buford said. "He does everything well. He can defend. He can run the floor. And -- as we all know -- he can hit big shots. We're excited to add a player with his skills, experience and leadership to our team.''

But Horry is coming off a poor season, when he averaged 6.5 points and missed 36 of 38 3-pointers during the playoffs.

His last 3-point miss, at the end of Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals against San Antonio, would have given the Lakers a victory and a lead in the series. Instead, the Lakers lost and the Spurs went on to win the NBA title.

During 80 regular-season games, Horry averaged 6.5 points and 6.4 rebounds in 29.3 minutes.

Horry also won two NBA championships with the Houston Rockets as part of an 11-year career.
